Project Outreach offers an informative lecture about government policy and the restrictions governing asylum seekers, followed by an in-person presentation by an asylum seeker telling his/her story of escape and immigration. We believe that meetings between the asylum seeker community and the Israeli public helps dispel prejudice and gives asylum seekers agency by enabling them to tell their stories at first hand. Most Israelis are unaware of the restrictions, discrimination and humiliation suffered by asylum seekers and once they learn the facts, it generates a profound change of attitude towards them. Asylum seekers and Israeli volunteers power Project Outreach. In 2022-23 approximately 1000 Israelis in 20 frameworks, pre-military courses (Mechinot), schools, universities and community centers reached out to be part of the program. It generates a small income for NRC which is shared with participating asylum seekers.
An evening bringing Israelis and asylum seekers together in an informal setting, where the audience is invited to ask questions of asylum seekers who in turn tell their stories, talk about their hopes and fears. For many locals this is their first time meeting asylum seekers and it is a real eye opener for them.
Project Outreach and its companion Don’t mind My Asking can be booked for any group in Israel or abroad (via Zoom).
